Ok,, the protest is over and I’m back online. I tried to avoid using the Internet at all yesterday. No Facebook, no Twitter, no YouTube, no WordPress. And mainly what it did was show me just how much time I spend on my computer – TOO MUCH! But it sounds like the overall protest did make Congress sit up and take notice, which is good. One local Congresswoman even joined in, which is great! Hopefully they will all step back, and figure out some law that actually just stops online piracy. Because online piracy is definitely a bad thing. But so is censorship. It will be interesting to see what happens next!

Wednesday, January 18th, many websites will be dark in protest against SOPA and PIPA. Other websites and authors have done a better job describing the situation and the reasons for the protest than I can. In particular check out George Takei at http://www.allegiancemusical.com/blog-entry/day-no-takei Basically, what is being sold as a way to end internet piracy can, in fact, seriously curtail freedom of speech. I wasn’t able to figure out any of the fancy plug-ins to make my page show some cool graphic, or re-direct you to a site that explains more, so I’m just telling you about it.
I know, I know, me staying off Facebook, Twitter and WordPress will not have world-shattering implications. I suspect I’m the only one who will notice, quite honestly. Even so, I want to stand up in my own small corner of the web and be counted with the rest of the people who believe in freedom of speech. Censorship is wrong, and completely un-American. Stand with us, and tell Congress NO on SOPA!! And join our protest. Even a drop of water will wear away a stone eventually – imagine millions of drops. See you after the 18th.
Today the CA State Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8. And I’ve been so angry and sad since I heard the ruling that it’s taken me all day to write anything coherent on the topic!
First, let me make clear where I’m coming from. I am not a lesbian. I am straight, and have been married for over 20 years to the love of my life. And I believe that EVERYONE should have the right to marry the love of their life. It’s that simple. Prop. 8 is wrong, and no matter how many people were scared into voting for it, or how many courts uphold it, it’s still wrong! And we must continue to fight it and the hate behind it.
I just can NOT understand why people are so against gay marriage, or even homosexuality in general. Why do they find it so threatening? Why can’t we just live and let live? It just makes no sense to me. “Protect marriage” they howled. From what? How does letting gay couples marry hurt my marriage? And who says straight people are doing marriage any favors? Look at the divorce rate! Look at celebrities who go to Vegas, get drunk, get married, wake up sober the next morning and get it annulled. This is ok, but Frank and Ted getting married is a problem? Why??
And I’m sick and tired of people using religion, yet again, as an excuse to hurt others. Doesn’t the Bible say “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”? (I checked and, yes, it does. TWICE! Matthew 7:12, and Luke 6:31) So, Christians would like to have their right to marriage taken away? Hmm, probably not. And while we’re talking about the Bible – where exactly does it say “permit no homosexuals to marry”? I looked, and it ain’t there! Oh, there’s something in Leviticus about “men who lie with men”. But there’s also a lot in Leviticus about the proper way to offer animal sacrifices, and I don’t see too many churches following that practice. So why pick out that one tiny phrase, enforce that and ignore the rest? It just doesn’t work that way!
Our country chose hope over fear when we elected President Obama. California needs to get it’s act together and follow the example of states like Iowa, and finally choose Love over Hate. We can do it. It’s just going to take us a little longer than we’d hoped.
